Shell Omala S4 WE 150

Shell Omala S4 WE 150 is a high-performance synthetic industrial gear oil specifically developed for demanding worm drive applications. Formulated using specially selected polyalkylene glycol (PAG) base fluids combined with advanced additive technology, the lubricant delivers excellent lubrication performance under severe operating conditions. Shell Omala S4 WE 150 is designed to provide long service life, strong protection against wear and micropitting, and improved energy efficiency compared with conventional mineral-based gear oils.

One of the key advantages of Shell Omala S4 WE 150 is its ability to provide extended lubricant life. Industrial worm gear systems often operate under high temperatures and heavy loads that can accelerate lubricant degradation. Shell Omala S4 WE 150 is formulated to provide excellent oxidation and thermal stability, helping resist the formation of harmful oxidation products during operation. This stability allows the lubricant to maintain system cleanliness and lubrication performance over extended service intervals, helping reduce maintenance requirements and equipment downtime.

Shell Omala S4 WE 150 also offers excellent wear protection and high resistance to micropitting. Worm gear systems typically operate with high sliding contact between gear surfaces, making effective lubrication critical for preventing metal-to-metal contact. The advanced additive system provides excellent load carrying capability, forming a durable lubricating film that protects gears and bearings even under shock loading conditions. This enhanced protection helps extend component life and ensures reliable gearbox performance in demanding applications.

Another significant benefit of Shell Omala S4 WE 150 is its ability to improve system efficiency. The synthetic PAG formulation provides reduced friction compared with mineral oil-based products, which can help lower operating temperatures and improve the efficiency of worm gear systems. Rig testing and field experience have demonstrated efficiency improvements of up to 15% compared with mineral gear oils and around 11% compared with other synthetic hydrocarbon-based lubricants. These improvements contribute to reduced energy consumption and improved overall equipment performance.

Shell Omala S4 WE 150 is recommended for enclosed industrial worm gear reduction systems operating under severe conditions such as high loads, wide temperature variations and environments where maintenance access may be limited. It is particularly suitable for installations where extended oil life is required, such as gear motor systems or inaccessible systems including yaw gears in wind turbine applications. The lubricant can also be used for lubricating bearings and other components operating in circulating or splash-lubricated systems.

Physical characteristics include a kinematic viscosity of approximately 136 mm²/s at 40°C and 22.5 mm²/s at 100°C with a viscosity index of approximately 188. The lubricant has a density of approximately 1076 kg/m³ at 15°C, a flash point of approximately 268°C and a pour point of approximately –42°C, supporting reliable lubrication performance across a wide range of demanding industrial operating conditions.
