Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 500
Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 500 is a high-performance synthetic lubricating oil specifically developed for use in aircraft turbine engines operating under demanding conditions. Formulated with a 5 mm²/s synthetic hindered ester base oil and a carefully balanced additive system, it provides outstanding thermal and oxidation stability, excellent metal passivation and reliable performance across a wide operating temperature range.
This oil was developed to meet the stringent requirements of Pratt & Whitney 521 Type II and MIL-PRF-23699 specifications, making it suitable for the majority of civil and military turbine engines requiring this class of lubricant. With the introduction of the more demanding SAE AS5780 specification, Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 500 achieved approval as an SPC (Standard Performance Capability) oil, confirming its capability to meet today’s higher performance expectations for turbine lubrication systems.
Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 500 is approved for use in a wide range of turbine engines and accessories. These include engines from major manufacturers such as General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, Pratt & Whitney Canada, Rolls-Royce, Honeywell, Engine Alliance and Safran Helicopter Engines. It is also approved for use in all Honeywell auxiliary power units (APUs) requiring 5 cSt oils, as well as Pratt & Whitney APS series APUs. Beyond aviation, the oil is suitable for selected industrial and marine gas turbine applications, including various Rolls-Royce, General Electric and Pratt & Whitney industrial turbine models.
In service, Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 500 demonstrates excellent low-temperature performance, with a pour point below –54°C, ensuring reliable cold-start capability. Its high flash point and low evaporation loss help minimise oil consumption and deposits at elevated operating temperatures. The oil also delivers strong resistance to foaming, corrosion and deposit formation, as demonstrated by its performance in bearing rig tests, thermal stability evaluations and gear tests.
Due to its synthetic ester formulation, Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 500 should not be used with incompatible seal materials and may affect certain paints and plastics. Users are advised to confirm compatibility and approvals with the equipment manufacturer before use.
