Shell AeroShell Fluid 3
Shell AeroShell Fluid 3 is a general-purpose mineral lubricating oil formulated for aircraft applications requiring a light oil with good low-temperature characteristics and a low freezing point. Oxidation and corrosion inhibited, it provides dependable lubrication performance across a wide operating temperature range and is particularly suited to components that require a low-viscosity oil with controlled volatility.
The product is recommended for the general lubrication of aircraft parts such as hinges, pivot joints, shaft joints, linkage pins and bearings, pulleys, cables, camera mechanisms, radio and radar gear, and instruments. Due to its ease of application, it is commonly applied by oil can or brush and is often described as an “oilcan lubricant.”
Shell AeroShell Fluid 3 operates effectively within a temperature range of –54°C to +121°C, maintaining fluidity at very low temperatures while providing stable lubrication under moderate heat. Its relatively low viscosity supports smooth movement of lightly loaded components, while good resistance to evaporation helps minimise oil loss during service.
The formulation offers strong protection against oxidation and corrosion, helping to preserve metal components during operation and periods of inactivity. It demonstrates controlled acid number change and viscosity stability during corrosion and oxidation testing, supporting long-term reliability in service. The oil also passes stringent low-temperature stability and precipitation tests, confirming its suitability for cold climate and high-altitude applications.
Shell AeroShell Fluid 3 meets the requirements of MIL-PRF-7870E and carries NATO Code O-142 and Joint Service Designation OM-12 (obsolete). It is suitable for a wide range of military and civil aviation lubrication tasks where a mineral-based light oil is specified.
For high-temperature applications where frequent re-lubrication is not practical, the synthetic alternative Shell AeroShell Fluid 12 may be recommended. In such cases, compatibility with seals, paints and other materials should be verified.
