Shell AeroShell Grease 64
Shell AeroShell Grease 64 is a synthetic lithium complex grease developed specifically for aircraft applications requiring additional extreme pressure (EP) capability. It comprises Shell AeroShell Grease 33 fortified with 5% molybdenum disulphide, combining the advanced anti-wear and anti-corrosion performance of Grease 33 with the added load-carrying benefits of a solid lubricant. This formulation makes it particularly suitable for highly loaded sliding components where conventional general-purpose greases may not provide sufficient protection.
Designed to address specific airframe lubrication requirements, Shell AeroShell Grease 64 retains the universal airframe lubrication characteristics of its parent grease while providing enhanced EP properties. It is especially recommended for highly loaded, sliding applications where molybdenum disulphide is specified to prevent metal-to-metal contact under boundary lubrication conditions.
The grease operates effectively across a wide temperature range of –73°C to +121°C. It maintains stable consistency and lubrication performance under extreme cold conditions while providing reliable protection at elevated temperatures. Its high drop point (minimum 220°C typical) and strong oxidation stability support dependable service life during prolonged operation.
Shell AeroShell Grease 64 demonstrates excellent load carrying capability, with a Four Ball EP Load Wear Index exceeding specification requirements. It also offers strong resistance to water washout, low evaporation loss and controlled oil separation, helping maintain lubrication integrity in challenging environments. Additional performance characteristics include reliable copper corrosion protection, rust prevention performance and low-temperature torque control, ensuring smooth operation in cold start conditions.
The grease meets MIL-G-21164D and is equivalent to DEF STAN 91-57 and DCSEA 353/A. It carries NATO Code G-353 and Joint Service Designation XG-276, confirming its suitability for demanding military and civil aviation applications.
As a synthetic hydrocarbon/ester-based grease, Shell AeroShell Grease 64 must not be used with incompatible seal materials. When applied as recommended, it provides enhanced protection for highly loaded sliding components while maintaining the anti-corrosion and anti-wear standards expected in modern aircraft maintenance programmes.
