Shell AeroShell Oil 80
Shell AeroShell Oil 80 is a straight mineral lubricating oil specifically developed for aircraft piston engines. It is blended from selected high viscosity index base stocks and contains no additives other than a small quantity of antioxidant and, where required, a pour point depressant to improve low-temperature fluidity. As a non-dispersant oil, it is particularly suited to specific operational requirements and engine break-in procedures.
The oil corresponds to SAE 40 viscosity grade under SAE J1966 (which replaces MIL-L-6082E) and is one of four viscosity grades available within the AeroShell straight mineral oil range, alongside AeroShell Oils 65, 100 and 120. The grade number reflects the viscosity at 210°F measured in Saybolt Universal Seconds.
Shell AeroShell Oil 80 is approved for use in four-stroke cycle (four-cycle) certified aircraft reciprocating piston engines, except Porsche engines, and in other aircraft radial engines that require oil meeting SAE J1966 (MIL-L-6082) and do not require a dispersant additive. It is used primarily during the break-in period of most new or recently overhauled four-stroke aviation piston engines. Since break-in duration and lubrication recommendations vary, operators should always refer to the original engine manufacturer or overhaul facility for specific guidance.
Typical physical characteristics demonstrate stable high-temperature viscosity, with kinematic viscosity at 100°C within SAE 40 limits, and a viscosity index exceeding minimum specification requirements. The oil offers a low pour point for improved cold weather handling and a flash point above 225°C, supporting safe operation at elevated temperatures. Low sulphur and ash content, controlled total acid number and successful copper corrosion and trace sediment testing confirm its suitability for aviation engine use.
