Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 308
Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 308 is a 3 mm²/s synthetic ester lubricating oil developed specifically for aircraft turbine engines requiring MIL-PRF-7808 (formerly MIL-L-7808) Grade 3 performance. Formulated with carefully selected additives, it is designed to improve resistance to oxidation and corrosion while minimising component wear under demanding operating conditions.
The oil provides strong thermal and oxidation stability, helping to reduce deposit formation and maintain clean engine components during service. Performance in the WADC deposition test demonstrates controlled deposit rating, minimal acid number increase and limited viscosity change, confirming its suitability for high-temperature turbine operation.
Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 308 offers reliable corrosion protection for critical engine materials, including silver and bronze components. Corrosion testing shows minimal material loss under elevated temperature conditions, while additional lead corrosion and copper corrosion evaluations confirm effective protection against metal degradation. The oil also passes stringent corrosion and oxidation stability testing over extended high-temperature exposure.
Low-temperature performance is equally important for turbine engine oils. Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 308 demonstrates strong viscosity control at –51°C, ensuring dependable fluidity during cold start conditions. Its flash point exceeds minimum specification requirements, supporting safe operation at elevated temperatures. Controlled evaporation loss further contributes to stable oil consumption characteristics in service.
Elastomer compatibility testing confirms that Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 308 maintains acceptable swell, tensile strength and elongation change characteristics across a range of specified seal materials under high-temperature exposure. However, as a synthetic ester oil, it should not be used with incompatible seal materials and may affect certain paints and plastics.
Shell AeroShell Turbine Oil 308 meets MIL-PRF-7808M Grade 3 and carries NATO Code O-148 and Joint Service Designation OX-9. It is intended for use in specific turbo-prop and turbo-jet engines where a 3 cSt turbine oil is required.
