Shell Heat Transfer S2 is a high-performance heat transfer fluid developed for use in enclosed and indirectly heated fluid circulation systems. The oil is formulated using carefully selected and highly refined mineral base oils designed to provide stable thermal performance, efficient heat transfer and extended service life. Its formulation ensures reliable operation in industrial heat transfer applications where consistent temperature control and fluid stability are critical.

One of the key advantages of Shell Heat Transfer S2 is its excellent resistance to thermal cracking and oxidation. During operation in high-temperature systems, heat transfer fluids can degrade due to prolonged exposure to heat and oxygen. Shell Heat Transfer Oil S2 is formulated to resist these degradation processes, helping prevent oil thickening and maintaining stable fluid performance over extended operating periods. This contributes to longer oil life and reduced maintenance requirements for industrial heating systems.

The oil also supports high system efficiency. Its relatively low viscosity enables excellent fluidity and circulation throughout the heat transfer system, allowing efficient transfer of heat across a wide operating temperature range. In addition, the fluid has a low vapour pressure which helps resist thermal cracking at high temperatures. This characteristic reduces the formation of volatile decomposition products that could otherwise accumulate and require removal through expansion chambers or condensate recovery systems.

Another important feature of Shell Heat Transfer S2 is its ability to maintain system cleanliness. The oil is non-corrosive and has strong solvency properties, enabling it to keep oxidation products suspended in the fluid rather than allowing them to deposit on internal system surfaces. This helps minimise the formation of deposits on heat exchangers, piping and heating elements. Clean internal surfaces allow the heat transfer system to maintain high thermal efficiency and stable performance throughout long operating cycles.

Shell Heat Transfer S2 is recommended for use in enclosed circulating heat transfer systems used across a wide range of industrial sectors. Typical applications include process heating systems in chemical plants, textile manufacturing operations and various other industrial processes requiring controlled heat transfer. The fluid is also suitable for smaller heating systems such as oil-filled radiators used in domestic or commercial environments.

The oil is designed for high temperature continuous heat transfer equipment and can operate with maximum film temperatures up to approximately 330°C and maximum bulk oil temperatures up to approximately 300°C when the system is properly designed and operated. These characteristics make it suitable for a wide range of industrial heating processes requiring reliable high temperature performance.

Physical characteristics include a kinematic viscosity of approximately 29 mm²/s at 40°C and 5.1 mm²/s at 100°C. The oil has a density of around 857 kg/m³ at 20°C, a flash point of approximately 220°C and a pour point of approximately –12°C. These properties support reliable heat transfer performance and stable operation across a broad range of industrial operating conditions.
