Shell Sirius X 40
Shell Sirius X 40 is a premium super high performance diesel engine oil (SHPDO) developed to meet the demanding lubrication requirements of high-output, high-speed diesel engines operating on distillate fuels. Formulated with high-quality base oils and advanced additive technology, the lubricant delivers excellent engine protection, enhanced cleanliness and extended service intervals compared with conventional diesel engine oils. The formulation is particularly well suited for engines operating under heavy loads and high temperatures where long oil life and reliable component protection are critical.
One of the key advantages of Shell Sirius X 40 is its outstanding piston cleanliness performance. The advanced detergent and dispersant additive system helps maintain clean pistons and ensures free-running piston rings even under severe operating conditions. Maintaining piston cleanliness is essential for efficient combustion and reliable engine operation, helping reduce the risk of deposit build-up that could affect engine efficiency and durability.
Shell Sirius X 40 also provides exceptional protection against bore polishing, a common issue in high-output diesel engines. Bore polishing can lead to increased blow-by, higher oil consumption and reduced engine efficiency. The SHPDO formulation helps control these effects by maintaining an effective lubricating film between moving engine components and keeping soot particles safely suspended within the oil. This helps preserve engine efficiency and protect internal engine surfaces from excessive wear.
Another important benefit of Shell Sirius X 40 is its excellent oxidation resistance and thermal stability. The lubricant is designed to withstand high operating temperatures and severe service conditions while maintaining stable lubrication performance. Compared with conventional diesel engine oils, Shell Sirius X 40 offers significantly improved oxidation resistance, allowing it to maintain effective protection over longer operating periods and extended oil drain intervals.
Shell Sirius X 40 also features a high reserve alkalinity with a Total Base Number (TBN) of approximately 17. This high alkalinity reserve helps neutralise acidic by-products produced during fuel combustion, protecting engine components from corrosion and maintaining reliable lubrication performance throughout the oil service interval. This is particularly important for engines operating on marine distillate fuels that may contain higher sulphur levels.
The lubricant is recommended for high-speed diesel engines operating on distillate fuels in demanding applications such as marine propulsion systems, fast vessels and compact generator sets where high power-to-weight ratios are common. It is suitable for engines used in marine and industrial applications where extended drain intervals and reliable performance are required.
Shell Sirius X 40 meets key manufacturer requirements including MTU Type II high performance category, Cummins Wärtsilä Engine Company (CWEC) and MWM Deutz high-output engines such as the TBD 620 series. It also meets the requirements of Caterpillar 3600 Series engines and carries the API CF performance classification. Physical characteristics include a kinematic viscosity of approximately 139 mm²/s at 40°C and 14 mm²/s at 100°C with a density of approximately 0.890 kg/l at 15°C, a flash point of approximately 230°C and a pour point of approximately –18°C, supporting reliable lubrication performance across demanding operating conditions.
