Shell Turbo Oil T 68
Shell Turbo Oil T 68 is a high-quality industrial turbine oil developed to provide reliable lubrication, extended service life and dependable protection for modern steam turbines and light-duty gas turbines. Formulated using high-quality hydrotreated base oils combined with carefully balanced zinc-free additives, Shell Turbo Oil T 68 delivers excellent resistance to oxidation, strong protection against rust and corrosion and stable lubrication performance in demanding turbine applications. The formulation continues the long-standing reputation of Shell Turbo Oils as a reliable standard for turbine lubrication across power generation and industrial applications.
One of the key advantages of Shell Turbo Oil T 68 is its excellent oxidation stability. Turbine oils operate continuously under elevated temperatures and exposure to air, conditions that can accelerate lubricant degradation. Shell Turbo Oil T 68 uses inherently stable base oils combined with an effective oxidation inhibitor package to resist oxidative breakdown. This helps reduce the formation of corrosive acids, sludge and deposits, extending oil life and helping reduce maintenance costs associated with oil changes and system cleaning.
Shell Turbo Oil T 68 also offers excellent resistance to foaming and rapid air release characteristics. Anti-foam additives in the formulation help minimise foam formation within the lubrication system. At the same time, the oil quickly releases entrained air, reducing the risk of pump cavitation, excessive component wear or premature lubricant degradation. These properties help maintain stable oil circulation and improve overall turbine system reliability.
Another important benefit of Shell Turbo Oil T 68 is its excellent water separation capability. Water contamination can commonly occur in steam turbine systems, and effective demulsibility is essential to maintain lubrication performance. Shell Turbo Oil T 68 separates water efficiently, allowing excess water to be drained from the lubrication system. This helps minimise corrosion, prevent premature wear and reduce the likelihood of unplanned equipment maintenance.
Shell Turbo Oil T 68 also provides strong rust and corrosion protection for turbine components. The formulation protects metal surfaces from rust formation and guards against corrosion even in environments where moisture or humidity may be present during operation or shutdown periods. This protection helps maintain equipment integrity and extend the service life of critical turbine components.
Shell Turbo Oil T 68 is suitable for a wide range of turbine and industrial lubrication applications. Typical uses include lubrication of industrial steam turbines, light-duty gas turbines where enhanced anti-wear performance is not required, hydroelectric turbine systems, and centrifugal or axial compressors and pumps where R&O type turbine oils are recommended.
Physical characteristics include a kinematic viscosity of approximately 68 mm²/s at 40°C and 8.95 mm²/s at 100°C with a viscosity index of approximately 105. Shell Turbo Oil T 68 has a density of approximately 871 kg/m³ at 15°C, a flash point of around 240°C and a pour point of approximately −24°C, supporting reliable lubrication performance across a wide range of turbine operating conditions.
