Millers Oils Falcon C3 5W-30
Millers Oils Falcon C3 5W-30 is a fully synthetic 5W-30 engine oil built to the ACEA C3 specification, using low SAPS chemistry. It is intended for current petrol and diesel passenger car and light commercial engines, including the large proportion of them that run a diesel particulate filter or a catalytic converter.
Falcon is where Millers Oils place their value range. It sits below Trident Professional and XF Premium in the line-up, and the difference is commercial rather than categorical: the oil answers the same C3 specification, but the range is built and packaged around cost per litre in volume instead of around shelf presence and a long published approval list. For a workshop putting through a steady number of C3 services, or a fleet doing its own servicing, that is usually the trade-off worth making.
The low SAPS part of the description is the reason this oil exists in the form it does. SAPS stands for sulphated ash, phosphorus and sulphur, and a low SAPS oil deliberately restricts all three. Ash is the problem element for a diesel particulate filter, because unlike soot it does not burn off during a regeneration cycle. It simply accumulates, regenerations come round more often, and eventually the filter needs cleaning or replacing. Phosphorus and sulphur do comparable damage to a catalytic converter. Running a full SAPS oil in an engine specified for C3 will not cause an immediate failure, which is precisely why it happens, but it shortens the life of aftertreatment hardware that costs considerably more than the oil ever will.
ACEA C3 is not only an emissions-hardware specification. It also sets a floor on high temperature high shear viscosity, which distinguishes it from the thinner fuel-economy grades in the same C family. In practice that means a C3 oil maintains a load-carrying film in a hot, hard-worked engine, so it suits the higher output turbocharged diesels and direct injection petrols where bearing loads are significant.
The 5W-30 grade covers the two conditions an engine oil has to handle at once. The 5W end governs how readily the oil moves when cold, which decides how quickly the bearings, valvetrain and timing drive see pressure after a cold start. The 30 end governs the film that remains at operating temperature once the oil has thinned. A fully synthetic base stock is what allows both to be met properly, and it holds up better than a mineral equivalent across a long drain interval.
Falcon C3 5W-30 is supplied only in bulk, which tells you plainly who it is for. The 20L drum suits a workshop dispensing point or a modest mixed fleet; the 199L barrel suits higher throughput operations set up for bulk dispensing. Millers Oils advised in March 2024 that the barrels moved from red to blue after a change of supplier, with no change to the oil itself, so a blue drum arriving against an older red one is expected.
One caveat worth stating plainly. Millers Oils do not publish a manufacturer approval list for Falcon C3 5W-30 in the way they do for Trident Professional, so this page does not claim one. Check the handbook confirms a C3 5W-30 is correct for the vehicle, and if you need a specific OEM approval evidenced, contact Velocity Edge and we will get the current position in writing from Millers before you order.
Available from Velocity Edge in 20L drum and 199L barrel.
