Millers Oils Millgear EP 220
Millers Oils Millgear EP 220 is a mineral oil based industrial gear oil with extreme pressure additive technology, formulated for the lubrication and protection of gear teeth even under high load conditions. It is used as received for industrial gear applications including spur, helical and bevel gears.
ISO VG 220 is the most commonly specified industrial gear grade, and it is where most enclosed gearbox nameplates point. Extreme pressure additives are the defining feature: under high load the additive reacts at the tooth surface to form a protective film in the moments when the oil film alone would be too thin to prevent contact. The result is reduced wear and extended equipment life on the gear sets that are hardest to replace.
Micropitting is the failure mode that catches out gearboxes running otherwise adequate oil, and Millgear EP 220 maintains consistent film thickness for protection against it according to the FVA 54/7 test. That is a meaningful distinction for anyone specifying oil for a modern high-torque-density gearbox, where surface fatigue rather than outright scuffing tends to be the limiting factor.
Excellent thermal stability gives increased oil life and longer re-lubrication intervals, and minimised deposit formation improves oil cleanliness and reduces maintenance. Good compatibility with elastomers and seals extends seal life, which matters on a gearbox where a seal change means downtime and an oil loss.
The performance profile covers DIN 51517 Part 3 CLP, ISO 12925-1 CKC, AIST (US Steel) 224, AGMA 252.04, AGMA 9004-D95, AGMA 9005-E02 and AGMA 9005-F16, Cincinnati P-74 for ISO 220, David Brown S1.53.104, SEB 181226, and Siemens Flender gear oils revision 15.
Typical characteristics for the 220 grade are a density of 0.891 g/ml at 15°C, a kinematic viscosity of 220 cSt at 40°C, a viscosity index of 96, a pour point of -9°C and a flash point above 250°C.
