Shell Corena S4 R 68 is a premium synthetic air compressor oil developed to deliver exceptional lubrication performance and long service life in modern rotary screw and sliding vane air compressors. Formulated with high-performance synthetic base oils and a specialised additive system, Shell Corena S4 R 68 provides excellent resistance to thermal breakdown, superior wear protection and reliable system efficiency even in demanding operating environments.
One of the key advantages of Shell Corena S4 R 68 is its ability to deliver extremely long oil drain intervals. Under normal operating conditions the lubricant can support maintenance intervals of up to 10,000 operating hours, and in certain approved applications this may extend to 12,000 hours. This extended service life is made possible by the oil’s exceptional resistance to oxidation and chemical degradation, allowing it to maintain stable performance even when compressors operate at discharge temperatures exceeding 100°C. Longer oil life helps reduce maintenance costs, minimise downtime and improve overall equipment reliability.
Shell Corena S4 R 68 also provides excellent protection against wear and corrosion. The formulation contains an advanced ashless anti-wear additive system that protects critical internal components such as bearings and gears. By maintaining a strong lubricating film between metal surfaces, the oil helps reduce friction and mechanical wear, extending the life of key compressor parts and improving operational reliability.

This helps maintain lubrication performance and ensures efficient compressor operation even in humid environments. The formulation also resists deposit formation on rotating components and in oil-air separator systems, maintaining internal cleanliness and reliable long-term performance.
Shell Corena S4 R 68 is suitable for use in oil-flooded or oil-injected rotary vane and screw air compressors, particularly in severe service conditions such as high temperatures or humid environments. It can also be used as a synthetic bearing or circulating oil where ISO VG 32–68 oils are required. The product meets ISO 6743-3 L-DAJ classification and is approved by ABB for use in VTR turbochargers with oil change intervals of up to 5,000 hours.
Physical characteristics include an ISO viscosity grade of 68, viscosity of approximately 68 mm²/s at 40°C and 10.2 mm²/s at 100°C, a viscosity index of 135, density of 848 kg/m³ at 15°C, flash point of 248°C, and pour point of −48°C, ensuring reliable lubrication across a wide operating temperature range.
