Shell Gadus S2 OG 40
Shell Gadus S2 OG 40 is a premium open gear grease developed for the lubrication and protection of heavily loaded open gear systems operating under extreme industrial conditions. The lubricant is formulated using a blend of high-quality paraffinic mineral oils and synthetic base oils combined with carefully selected additives to provide reliable protection in demanding mining, quarrying and heavy industrial applications.
A key advantage of Shell Gadus S2 OG 40 is its exceptional load carrying capability. Open gears used in heavy equipment such as grinding mills, draglines and excavators are subjected to very high loads and sliding contact pressures. The lubricant forms a durable protective cushion between gear teeth, helping reduce metal-to-metal contact and preventing excessive wear. Molybdenum disulphide and other solid lubricants in the formulation further enhance load carrying performance by reducing tooth contact temperatures and protecting gear surfaces from pitting.
Shell Gadus S2 OG 40 also demonstrates excellent mechanical and physical stability. The grease maintains its soft and pliable structure during operation, allowing it to remain evenly distributed across gear surfaces over long periods of use. This property helps prevent the build-up of hardened lubricant deposits in the roots of gear teeth, ensuring consistent lubrication performance and reducing maintenance requirements.
The product also provides strong resistance to water contamination and environmental exposure. In many industrial environments, open gears are exposed to dust, dirt, moisture and salt water. Shell Gadus S2 OG 40 is water repellent and resists wash-off caused by immersion or spray, allowing the lubricant to remain in place even in harsh operating conditions. This characteristic ensures reliable lubrication and protects components from corrosion in hostile environments.
Shell Gadus S2 OG 40 also contributes to environmental compliance by being formulated without intentionally added lead or solvent components. This design helps reduce environmental impact while still providing the high-performance lubrication required for heavy-duty open gear applications.
The grease is recommended for a wide range of heavy-duty applications including large open gears used in grinding mills, kilns, draglines, excavators, ship loaders, stackers and reclaimers. It can also be used for surface dressing of slow-moving gears exposed to the atmosphere, lubrication of plain bearings and pivot pins in earthmoving equipment, and protection of mooring or static wire ropes exposed to marine conditions.
Typical physical characteristics include base oil viscosity of approximately 655 mm²/s at 40°C and 40 mm²/s at 100°C. The grease uses a clay thickener and has a minimum flash point of 130°C. Extreme pressure performance is demonstrated by a four-ball weld load of approximately 6200 N and strong anti-wear characteristics with a maximum scar diameter of 0.67 mm. Additional testing confirms rust protection and high load carrying capability in heavy-duty gear applications.
