Shell Gadus S2 U460L 2
Shell Gadus S2 U460L 2 is a high-performance heavy-duty grease designed for industrial applications where high operating temperatures and heavy loads place significant demands on lubrication systems. The grease is formulated using a specially selected high viscosity mineral base oil combined with an inorganic non-soap clay thickener system. This advanced formulation allows the lubricant to provide reliable lubrication beyond the temperature limitations normally associated with conventional lithium-based greases.
A key advantage of Shell Gadus S2 U460L 2 is its excellent high-temperature performance. Traditional soap-thickened greases can soften or melt at elevated temperatures, causing the grease structure to collapse and reducing lubrication effectiveness. The inorganic clay thickener used in Shell Gadus S2 U460L 2 does not melt like conventional soap thickeners, enabling the grease to maintain its structural integrity even when exposed to sustained high temperatures. This allows the lubricant to continue providing protection in applications operating within a typical temperature range of –20°C to 180°C.
The grease also delivers strong protection for heavily loaded bearings. Its high viscosity base oil provides a durable lubricating film capable of supporting heavy loads and slow rotational speeds. This makes Shell Gadus S2 U460L 2 particularly suitable for applications involving slow-moving bearings subjected to high mechanical stress, where reliable lubrication film strength is critical to prevent wear and component damage.
Another important feature of the lubricant is its resistance to oxidation and evaporation. The high-quality solvent refined mineral base oil used in the formulation offers strong oxidation stability, helping to extend grease service life and maintain consistent lubrication performance over long operating periods. A specialised high-temperature oxidation inhibitor is also included to further improve resistance to thermal degradation in demanding environments.
Shell Gadus S2 U460L 2 also provides reliable sealing and adhesion characteristics. Because the grease does not soften significantly as temperature increases, it remains in place within bearing housings and continues to provide sealing protection even in the presence of vibration. This ability to maintain lubrication coverage under dynamic operating conditions helps ensure consistent bearing protection and reduces the risk of lubricant leakage.
The grease is recommended for heavily loaded bearings operating under high temperature conditions. It is commonly used in industrial applications where equipment may experience elevated temperatures or where high performance lubrication is required without resorting to more expensive synthetic or silicone-based lubricants. In some cases, the grease may be used at temperatures above 200°C when re-lubrication intervals are carefully controlled.
Physical characteristics include NLGI grade 2 consistency with an inorganic clay thickener and mineral base oil. Base oil viscosity is approximately 460 mm²/s at 40°C and 35 mm²/s at 100°C. The grease has a worked cone penetration of 265–295 (0.1 mm) and a high dropping point of approximately 300°C, supporting reliable lubrication performance in demanding high-temperature industrial environments
