One of the key advantages of Shell Omala S2 GX 680 is its ability to provide extended oil life. Industrial gearboxes frequently operate under elevated temperatures and heavy mechanical stress, which can accelerate lubricant degradation. Shell Omala S2 GX 680 is formulated to resist thermal and chemical breakdown throughout the oil service interval. Its strong oxidation stability helps minimise sludge formation and maintain consistent lubrication performance even when bulk oil temperatures reach approximately 100°C. In addition to gear systems, the oil can also be used for lubricating bearings and other steel-on-steel components operating under similar lubrication conditions.
Physical characteristics include a kinematic viscosity of approximately 680 mm²/s at 40°C and 40 mm²/s at 100°C with a viscosity index of approximately 105. The oil has a density of approximately 912 kg/m³ at 15°C, a flash point above 250°C and a pour point of approximately –9°C, supporting reliable lubrication performance across a wide range of industrial operating conditions.
