Shell Refrigeration Oil S2 FR-A 68
Shell Refrigeration Oil S2 FR-A 68 is a high-performance refrigeration compressor lubricant specifically developed for systems operating with ammonia (R717) refrigerant. Formulated using specially refined paraffinic base oils combined with carefully selected additives, the oil is designed to deliver reliable lubrication, long service life and efficient compressor operation. The formulation provides excellent resistance to deposit formation and maintains stable lubrication performance in demanding refrigeration applications across industrial, commercial and domestic systems.
One of the key advantages of Shell Refrigeration Oil S2 FR-A 68 is its ability to support efficient refrigeration system performance. The lubricant has been optimised for applications where effective oil separation from the refrigerant is required. It helps minimise “light end” oil carryover from the compressor into the refrigeration system, reducing the risk of oil coating on evaporator surfaces. By preventing excessive oil migration into the refrigeration circuit, the lubricant helps maintain heat transfer efficiency and supports consistent cooling performance across the system.
Shell Refrigeration Oil S2 FR-A 68 also provides excellent thermal and oxidation stability, allowing it to perform effectively in systems operating with high compressor discharge temperatures. This stability helps maintain lubricant performance over extended service intervals while reducing the formation of sludge and harmful deposits. The result is improved system cleanliness, reduced maintenance requirements and longer oil drain intervals compared with conventional mineral refrigeration oils.
The lubricant is suitable for use in a wide range of refrigeration compressor types including open, semi-hermetic and hermetic compressors. It can be used in both rotary and reciprocating compressor designs commonly found in refrigeration systems. Shell Refrigeration Oil S2 FR-A 68 is recommended for ammonia-based refrigeration systems where reliable lubrication and system efficiency are critical. It is capable of operating effectively at high compressor discharge temperatures and at evaporation temperatures as low as approximately –30°C.
In addition to ammonia refrigeration systems, the oil may also be used in systems operating with hydrocarbon refrigerants such as propane (R290). However, it is not recommended for use with CFC, HCFC or HFC refrigerants including R12, R22 or R134a. This makes the lubricant particularly suited to modern industrial refrigeration systems designed around ammonia or hydrocarbon refrigerants.
Physical characteristics include a kinematic viscosity of approximately 68 mm²/s at 40°C and 9 mm²/s at 100°C. The oil has a density of approximately 862 kg/m³ at 15°C, a flash point of approximately 232°C and a pour point of approximately –39°C. These properties support stable lubrication performance and reliable compressor operation across a wide range of refrigeration operating conditions.
