Shell Refrigeration Oil S4 FR-V 46 is a high-performance synthetic refrigeration compressor lubricant formulated using alkylated benzene base fluids. The lubricant has been developed to provide reliable lubrication and system cleanliness in a wide range of refrigeration compressor applications. Its formulation offers excellent solvency, strong thermal stability and long service life, making it suitable for refrigeration systems operating with many commonly used refrigerants.

It can be used in both rotary and reciprocating compressor types. The lubricant is compatible with a wide range of refrigerants including ammonia (R717), carbon dioxide (R744), hydrocarbons such as propane (R290) and traditional CFC and HCFC refrigerants including R12 and R22. However, it is not recommended for use with HFC refrigerants.
Physical characteristics include a kinematic viscosity of approximately 46 mm²/s at 40°C and 5.3 mm²/s at 100°C with a density of approximately 869 kg/m³ at 15°C. The oil has a flash point of approximately 180°C and a pour point of approximately –42°C, supporting reliable lubrication performance across a wide range of refrigeration system operating conditions.
